Welcome to my concertina site.
About thirty years ago we decided to into the country for a drive with
our youngsters. Whilst we were driving past a pub called The Fox we saw
morris dancers performing and stopped to watch. One of the morris dancers
came over (it was Sam - an old friend) and invited us to join them on
their day tour, which we did. We had a wonderful day and joined in their
sing-song in the evening.
I so enjoyed that day that I began to go along regularly and was eventualy
invited to join them. I didn't fancy the dancing but the music appealed
to me. One of the musicians was a well known folk singer called Brian
Blanchard who played a CG Jeffries Anglo concertina. I fell in love with
the instrument the moment I saw that it packed away into a little box
after making so much noise. I immediately went out and purchased a cheap
German Anglo concertina with big white buttons and started learning "Shepherds
Hey" and went on from there.
I progressed with the German Anglo concertina, and some of the members
of the Broadwood Morris Men formed a country dance band and asked me to
play along. By this time I had purchased a rare duet concertina and exchanged
it for a Jones Anglo and part exchanged that for a Jeffries
38 button CG. I was by then tuning and repairing concertinas as a
hobby / extra cash and bought a GD
and BpF Jeffries. My final buy
was a Wheatstone Linota.
Other bands approached me to play for them and I joined The Biggest Trio
In The World (6 of us). We played for a large folk festival in Ris Oranges
near Paris and heard French traditional music for the first time and just
had to have a go at it. Mel Stevens was at that time heavily into bagpipe
manufacture and made himself some French pipes. We found a Hurdy Gurdy
player and formed Rosbif. I now play for
Gig CB
formed from musicians that go to
The George Inn
sessions. It's great fun and very noisy. Why not visit if you are in the
area. Bring your concertina, we play on the first Monday (except for bank
holidays) of every month!
